On 10 May 2021, violent clashes shook Israeli civil society as protests and demonstrations taking place in Jerusalem spread to other, particularly mixed, cities across Israel. Triggered by the impending eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah/Shimon ha-Tzadik to make way for Jewish settlers, the confrontations rapidly intensified with the involvement of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip. During the events known in Arabic as Unity Intifada and in Hebrew as May 2021 Events, serious, direct confrontations took place at the civilian level between Palestinian and Jewish Israelis. The eleven-day clashes finally ended on 21 May with a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
